A-Frame home Lightning Striking an A-Frame Home

Lightning struck this Lady Lake, Florida home destroying the roof and damaging all of the rooms inside. The customer was quick to call SERVPRO of Lake County Florida to mitigate the damage. Our certified technicians responded promptly to begin the cleanup. First they removed the falling drywall to prevent anyone from getting hurt. Then they extracted the standing water to prevent it from further soaking into the building materials and causing mold to grow. They also contacted the customer's insurance company to help the claims process run smoothly and confirm that insurance was aware of all the actions being taken to prevent further damage. The customer was very happy with SERVPRO's response time, especially considering it was a storm where many of his neighbors were without power too. SERVPRO of Lake County will always make your disaster "Like it never even happened."

Are you sure this water is sanitary

Toilet overflow Sewage Flooding and Contamination

When working a water damage we distinguish each job by category. For instance, a Cat 1 would involve sanitary water, a Cat 2 would be significantly contaminated, and a Cat 3 would be grossly contaminated. This is important because it affects work activities and protective measures that are needed for each job. It is important for our technicians, when working these jobs, to protect themselves by wearing the following PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Full face respirator with combination HEPA particulate/organic vapor filters, a full body suit, nitrile gloves, heavy-duty work gloves and waterproof boots.

On this particular Cat 3 job, a building under construction experienced a sewage loss in one of the restrooms, which resulted in most of the floor throughout the wing being affected. We were contacted by the customer and were able to respond immediately to begin the work process. In this case, we performed a water extraction, decontaminated affected areas with an antimicrobial multiple times, removed flooring and drywall, placed several air scrubbers and dehumidifiers to aid in the drying process, and HEPA vacuumed all affected areas.

Upon completion of services our customer was thrilled to be able to resume construction on the building and appreciative that our highly trained and certified crew made such a massive, gross debacle “Like it never even happened.”

Hurricane Sally leaves the Florida panhandle with severe flooding and water damages throughout the Pensacola area. As of Thursday afternoon, thousands of Florida residents were without power. Our storm crews saw how much devastation the hurricane left behind. One bridge in Pensacola, Florida, is missing two large sections, likely because barges came loose and smashed into it. Roofs have been peeled away, boats are scattered, and some areas are cut off by downed trees or heavy flooding. SERVPRO of Lake County Florida sent our general manager and crew to help the storm team. They were very surprised on how devastating the hurricane storms can be. What a trying time it is for the residents of Pensacola and surrounding areas. We are glad we were able to help out.

Broken Pipes - Everything You Need to Know Before Calling an Expert

A burst pipe can cause significant damage within a very short time. If you are looking at a frozen pipe, remember that water expands in volume by 9 per cent with great force. The pipe simply can’t sustain the pressure and so it breaks open. Unless you happen to be a plumber, you will want to call one immediately.

Follow these simple steps:

  • Find your water main and shut it off immediately.
  • Safety first. If you have ceilings ready to drop, stay clear of the area.
  • Shut off the electricity if the water is seeping into any of your wiring.
  • Open a faucet to help relieve the remaining pressure.
  • Put a bucket under the leak if possible.
  • Start your clean up. Get out the mops and buckets, the wet vac or anything you have and start getting rid of any water you can. The quicker the better to help reduce the spread of the damage and prevent mold.
  • Set up any fans to blow warm air into the impacted rooms.
  • Open doors to closets and pantries to let air in and give it a chance to dry.
  • Clean up any obvious damage as soon as you can.
  • Review your insurance policy and call your agent.

Rain intrusion During a Thunder storm

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

When we say storm around here, it's easy to imagine hurricanes, tornadoes, and snow storms. But our crews also respond to damage sustained during a thunderstorm much like the one we experienced in Lake County last night. We had a previous customer call us to come out when she discovered the repair she thought was complete had failed in the middle of the storm. The affected area we had dried last weekend was saturated again. The on call tech headed out and was able to limit any further damage by extracting water and placing drying equipment. Our customer was incredibly pleased with our quick response which saved her home and belongings from any further damage. We were happy to help! If you experience a loss due to rainwater, please give us a call.

Water Loss with Containment

Water Loss

Water damages all have the potential to cause far-reaching damage when they strike. However, not all is lost. Water restoration experts can help salvage most of the items in a house. Homeowners count their losses too quick before engaging the services of restoration experts like SERVPRO. It is important to know the effects of water damage so that homeowners understand the need for remediation. Wind damage, for instance, can cause heavy roof damage. Roof damage is mainly from loose tiles or shingles. Wind damage during and after a storm can also cause moisture under loose shingles to slip through the roof. Homes with wooden roofs can experience wood swelling. This leads to further roof damage necessitating immediate repair. Postponing roof repair especially from strong storms containing rain and high winds only leads to more costs. A simple roof leak repair can turn into a roof replacement if not handled immediately. It is also crucial to conduct roof inspection, especially after a storm warning. This minimizes the costs to be incurred in roof repair after the storm damage happens. A roof inspection will identify all the damaged places, and the roof repair will be handled in time. All roof leaks are also sealed to ensure that the roof is able to withstand the coming weather damage. Homeowners need to explain the type of damage so that the home restoration experts can come with the right tools and gear to carry out water remediation. One such tool is a sump pump. These sump pumps are used to drain water after a flooding or water damage. A sump pump can also work automatically. It can be left in a room to drain the ground water. The pumps are able to handle the ground water even as it rises. Commercial sump pumps are also available to deal with massive flood water situations such as river flooding. In a home application, the flood pumps can be used with vacuums. For all your restoration needs please call SERVPRO of Lake County Florida.

2021 Water Damage Repair & Restore Costs: Ceiling, Basement, Drywall Per Sq Ft - HomeAdvisor

The average homeowner spends between $1,140 and $4,728 to restore or repair water damage, with an average of $2,931 (depending on the size of the loss) A licensed professional can determine the cause and extent of the destruction by categorizing and classifying the damage to your home — the two largest factors in figuring the final bill. Want to avoid large cleanup and repair bills? Preventative maintenance and cleaning up quickly after damage are critical to keeping costs down. How long moisture is left untreated increases the scope of the damage and allows mold to grow. Preventing damage by contacting professionals to diagnose causes and make small repairs can save thousands later. Regardless of cause or cost, always document the damage for insurance claims. Church Water Damage

8/20/2021 (Permalink)

Water Damage Standing water in room

Churches may be damaged by water from any number of sources. You have the normal causes such as burst pipes, damaged roofs, or natural disasters such as flash flooding. But then there are elements that other structures do not have to deal with, such as water damage from baptisteries, which hold large amounts of water and may cause serious problems if they decide to overflow or malfunction. The concept of water restoration in churches is the same as it is for any other building: the removal of the water from the property followed by the drying, cleaning, and repair of all surfaces that may have been involved. Depending on the area involved, as well as the depth and severity of the spill, the water will need to be extracted from the damaged zone. Wooden pews that were immersed in water may warp significantly, so special care will be needed to treat them during the drying process. Padded pews present their own brand of problems, since it may be impossible to dry the padding out, at least not before mold becomes a serious issue. Pews may need to be re-padded completely to avoid this problem. Churches also contain many electrical components; not just the standard electrical system, but also the electronics powering the sound system, lighting, and other components. Electricians will need to be consulted and proper inspections performed before any electrical devices or systems are turned back on. It is important to remember that water may run for a considerable distance through ceilings or other areas before finding a spot where it can leak downward, so remember to be thorough when checking upper levels for signs of damage or wear. Any classrooms or offices affected by the water will need to be dried out and all loose items removed for inspection, cleaning, repair and restoration. This should always be done away from the damaged area so that other restoration procedures are not interrupted. Water damage to worship centers or auditoriums may be severe due to the amount of space involved. Carpets will need to be given special care to preserve their beauty and prevent unsightly staining, or worse, the growth of mold beneath the surface. Parishioners should be prevented from entering the damaged area until all repairs are complete. This may mean relocation of worship services or other church activities for the duration of the restoration process.

Kitchen Fire Picture of Damage from Fire

Remember when your mother taught you not to leave the stove on unattended? There was a good reason for it, sometimes appliances can catch on fire. This was the case pertaining to this particular job. Our customer contacted us after their stove caught fire, which caused soot to be spread throughout their entire home. As is the result with all fires, there was also a coinciding Smokey odor that had permeated our customer's home. They called us to help with the damage and we were happy to be of service. We started by washing the walls and ceilings, cleaning the floors, and running a hydroxyl generator to help with the residual odor. In addition, the HVAC system was also cleaned as part of the process. This is a service that helps with soot and odor removal. Upon the completion of services, our customer could not believe the difference in their home. What started out as a huge mess was quickly rectified by our highly trained and certified crew.

Why SERVPRO-Carpet Cleaning

8/16/2021 (Permalink)

Stains on Carpet Carpet Cleaning

A large percentage of homes and business have carpet in at least one room. Carpet tends to catch dust, dirt, hair and other soils which negatively affect the life span of the floors. There are preventative measures one can take to reduce the wear and tear, thereby extending the life of the carpeting. These measures include vacuuming regularly, spot removal, rearranging furniture to alter traffic patterns, and using rugs and runners. Another useful task is to change HVAC filters regularly to help filter the dust and grit in the air.

A guideline for carpet cleaning frequency recommends carpets that see normal use be cleaned every 6-12 months and high use (such as entry ways or structures with high traffic) be cleaned every 3-6 months. Extending the time between cleanings causes the soils to be pushed deeper and deeper into the base of the carpet, which cannot be removed. Studies have shown the farther down the soils have been pushed, the less they can be removed, even with the more aggressive methods of carpet cleaning.

At SERVPRO of Lake County, we employ the hot water extraction method for carpet cleaning. This involves using an emulsifier to treat the carpets and lift soils and stains. After applying the solution to the floor, the technician will then use the extractor to remove the emulsifier, soils, and most of the moisture. Once the carpets are cleaned, we do recommend applying a scotch guard to help protect your carpets between cleanings. The application is quick and won't break the bank. If you are interested in our carpet cleaning service, please call the office today.

Fire Damage Dry Ice Blasting

Always count on SERVPRO to get the job done for you!

SERVPRO of Lake County Florida was contacted by a commercial facility to give an estimate on a severe fire cleanup. When we arrived onsite the maintenance area was severely damaged with fire and smoke. The parts bay was all smoked up and the smoke odor was also extremely bad. They asked for an estimate to get all the remediation work done ASAP, with a time frame under 4 weeks. We all put our heads together and came up with a plan. First in order was using Dry Ice Blasting to take care of all the major fire and soot damage on all the concrete walls. This process would be the cleanest and most effective way in getting it taken care of with minimal cleanup. The next step was cleaning all the parts bays and wiping down all the salvageable parts. The next step was water blasting the entire inside and outside of the vehicle bays that were affected. SERVPRO managed to get all this accomplished in 3 weeks, which made the customer very pleased on how we took control of their situation. We told him that our goal was to make it “Like it never even happened.”  Please call SERVPRO of Lake County FL. at Ph. 352-735-3311

SERVPRO Employees in front of a SERVPRO Vehicle SERVPRO Employees

My name is Brittany and I am the office manager of our franchise. I have been with this company for a Three years now and in that time, I have learned so much about the restoration and remediation industry. The losses we most frequently encounter are water. A water loss can occur for many reasons, including a leak in a supply line, a broken pipe, or a storm event. No matter the cause, each loss is devastating and needs to be handled with care. Our crews are highly trained in water restoration. Our Crew Chiefs and managers all hold water remediation technician and applied science of drying certifications from the IICRC. (The IICRC is explained in another blog entitled “The IICRC and what it Means to SERVPRO”)

Typically, my responsibility on each job is on the back end- I make sure all the paperwork is in order, build our invoice, deal with the insurance companies, and complete the file. The work you see takes place on site where our crews work on assessing the damage, placing equipment, and overseeing the drying process. They assist the customers each step of the way and act as the face of our franchise. Any loss is scary but we are happy to help!

I have worked a few water losses in my time here. One Sunday, I responded to a home that had flooded entirely after the toilet supply line broke. We spent hours extracting the standing water, taking moisture readings, and placing equipment. The work was hard and definitely a lot dirtier than I am used to. At the end of that first day, the customer's arrived to go over our progress. They had been onsite when we initially responded and we understood their panic. Their demeanor after seeing the home that evening was totally different. Their home wasn't back to normal, but they had a clear understanding of the process and what to expect after speaking with us. We walked each room and showed them what work had been performed- from removing baseboards to detaching doors to lifting the soaked carpet. Over the next few days, we continued to update them on the progress. By the time everything was dry, those folks felt more like family.

Some jobs are more difficult than others, some days seem longer than imaginable. But each day, I am appreciative of the industry and the difference our franchise can make for even just one person.

Building Inspections

Homeowners Happy Homeowners after purchasing a home inspected by SERVPRO

Why are building inspections important? Building inspections are very important to home buyers before making a home purchase. This is because there are many hidden things in a home a home owner is unaware of such as previous water leaks, HVAC cleanliness issues, microbial growth areas, roof damage, cracks in the foundation, or Vapor barrier leaks just to name a few. Potential home owners who make investments prior to having their homes inspected are risking hundreds or thousands of dollars on potentially unexpected repair costs. So the best way to have peace of mind is to hire a professional company like SERVPRO of Lake County to help evaluate your potential purchase before you invest any money in the structure. It's summer and it is heating up! With the temperature and humidity on the rise this summer be sure to look for signs of mold.

Pack Out

Boxes in Storage Pod Content Storage

Simply put, a pack out service specializes in retrieving items from a home that has been damaged by a flood or other major disaster. Afterwards, they help to ensure the quality of the items they have retrieved. A typical pack out service operation consists of three steps. These steps are retrieval, storage, and restoration. The pack out service is unable to give your home back to you. But they can help save the most precious items in the house, long after you thought they were gone for ever. They can also attempt to retrieve artwork, consumer electronics, furniture, and so on. However, not everything will be salvageable, which is why it’s important to have a prioritized list of what you would like them to seek out. Once the pack out service has retrieved the items, they will need to be placed in a safe place. Most pack out services have special locations where these items can be stored, either all at once or in stages as the retrieval process continues. These storage facilities are clean and climate-controlled. And the main purpose of such a facility is to house your items while your home is being restored.

Termite Damage

Wood Damage from termites Termite Damage

Termite infestation can do extensivedamage to the inside of walls and floors—often without detection. Since termites eat wood from the inside out, you probably won't find them until your home is infested, and you're more likely to see signs of damage than the bugs themselves. Look for:

  • Sawdust or sand-like material near windows and door frames, which could be droppings of dry wood termites. You may also notice tiny holes where sawdust has accumulated.
  • Mud tubes are structures that subterranean termites build to connect the nest to the source of wood. Check outdoors and indoors at the base of your home where the frame connects to the foundation and scan your crawlspace or basement if you have one, for the brown, branching structures. They can also hang from joists, so check the floor beams as well.
  • Look for accumulations of dry fecal pellets left behind by drywood termites.
  • Shed wings from the swarmer termites or the bugs themselves can often be found near windows or windowsills. Swarmers are attracted to light so check under outdoor fixtures.
  • Does wood framing sound hollow when you tap it? You might have termites.
  • Do you have wood that looks water-damaged but it hasn't been exposed to water? You might have termites.
  • If your painted or varnished wood or drywall is blistering, you might have termites.
  • If you notice damage across the wood grain, you might have termites

Industrial Hygienist

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

exposed ductwork Growth on Ductwork located in ceiling

An Industrial Hygienist is often called in to test the indoor air quality of structures affected by growth. The hygienist takes air and lift samples to be sent to the lab for comparison to outside levels. The samples are sent out to a lab, who tests each specimen and compares the results to a control group and samples from the outside environment. These tests help determine whether the spore levels inside the structure are outside of the safe range. If the structure "fails" the preliminary test, the hygienist will write a protocol that remediation companies can follow to help deem the structure safe. Here at SERVPRO of Lake County, we frequently work with protocols. Growth jobs can include setting containment, demolition, and micro cleaning. Our crews work diligently to clean the affected areas and reduce spore counts. After mitigation is complete, the hygienist will return to perform a post-test. This test shows whether the mitigation efforts were successful or if further action must be taken.

Who Should Wear A Cloth Face Covering?

General public

  • CDC recommends all people 2 years of age and older wear a cloth face covering in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
  • COVID-19 can be spread by people who do not have symptoms and do not know that they are infected. That’s why it’s important for everyone to wear cloth face coverings in public settings and practice social distance (staying at least 6 feet away from other people).
  • While cloth face coverings are strongly encouraged to reduce the spread of COVID-19, CDC recognizes there are specific instances when wearing a cloth face covering may not be feasible. In these instances, adaptations and alternatives should be considered whenever possible.

Mold

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

Mold in the classroom Mold on Student Desk

High Humidity and HVAC system not properly working:

A classroom with a high relative humidity experiences air that is very moist, making students feel overly chilled or sticky depending on the temperature. All that extra water in the air facilitates the growth of bacteria, mold, fungus and dust mites. This growth is harmful to students and teachers in many ways.

High humidity levels even result in condensation forming inside the windows, ceilings and walls of classrooms and other areas of a school, damaging building materials.

Controlling Humidity Levels
Moisture concerns inside schools are caused by a wide range of conditions, such as leaks in plumbing and in the roof, condensation, damp ground beneath a structure and outdoor humidity. The simple act of students exhaling creates moisture. Tightly sealed newer buildings might not allow moisture to escape. Even temporary, portable classrooms frequently see higher humidity and mold growth.

There are several ways to control and reduce humidity levels inside schools and classrooms.

  • Make sure adequate ventilation exists to keep humidity levels between 30% and 50%.
  • Install exhaust fans if you have kitchens for cooking and washing dishes inside classrooms. Give individual classrooms a de-humidifier.
  • Install insulation to cut back on condensation on cold surfaces like windows, exterior walls, pipes and floors.
  • Mount tile around drinking fountains and classroom sinks and on the floor below.

By controlling humidity levels, pathogens, mold, fungus and allergens are controlled as well. If mold is not removed after optimum humidity levels are reached, it can continue to affect the health of teachers and students.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

Carpet Cleaning Cleaning Commercial Carpet

Properly maintained commercial carpet is a strong asset to any facility, providing a clean professional look, a degree of comfort, and a means to remove dust and allergens from the air. Preserving this asset is important, and preventative steps should be taken including simple vacuuming once or twice a week during your scheduled facilities cleaning through more extensive carpet cleaning.

Stains

Many things can cause carpet stains; beverages, foods, fertilizer, pesticides, medicines, hair care products and vomit can cause serious staining, requiring carpet cleaning at some level. Often the damage is not discovered immediately, giving the stain time to set and thus becoming more difficult to remove. When this occurs, it is often necessary to contact companies that clean commercial carpets in order to obtain the best results with your facilities cleaning.

Here are a few steps to minimize stain damage:

  • Act soon. Do not let the spot dry and set
  • Always test a spot removal agent in a location concealed from view.
  • Blot the stain. Do not scrub it.
  • Apply a small amount of a recommended cleaning solution to a cloth, not directly to the carpet.
  • Work your way in from the edges of the spot, blotting and rubbing gently.
  • Consult a professional commercial carpet cleaner when dealing with unusual substances such as chemicals.

An Emergency Water damage came in toward the end of the work day. All of our crew chiefs and technician's were on other projects so our owners and myself (marketing and quality control manager) loaded up equipment on our cargo tailor and headed to the medical facility. Upon arrival we began to access the loss with the manager of the facility. We took reading of the areas affected and began to unload the equipment and placed it in the affected areas. We placed twenty two air movers, four dehumidifiers and one air scrubber. The cause of loss was from a janitors closet drain backup. They requested that we spray an anti microbial product through the entire facility. We sprayed approximately 3,000 square feet of the facility. The customers were very pleased how quickly we we responded to there loss and got everything under control.

Carpet Cleaning Commercial Carpet Cleaning

  1. Wet cleaning

How it works

Also known as hot water extraction or steam cleaning, the carpet is first pre-conditioned with a chemical reagent that liquefies soils and oil-based substances which may be present in the carpet fibers. Water is heated to a temperature near its boiling point and pressurized, then injected into the carpet. After about 10 to 15 minutes, the solution is extracted with a vacuum.

  1. Gets out soiling from deep down in the carpet.                                                                                                         2. Allows the use of high temperatures, pressures and chemical concentrates.                                                           3. Permits extended dwell times for reaction of cleaning solvents.                                                                                   4. Chemical reactivity facilitated by agitation with grooming tool or extraction wand.

This is the most widely used method.                                                                                                            Recommended by carpet manufacturers and industry cleaning experts and professionals

  1. Cleaning with an absorbent pad

How it works

This carpet cleaning method is also commonly known as bonnet cleaning and is most often used for routine light maintenance. It can also be used for regular carpet cleaning. The carpet is first vacuumed, and then a chemical solution is sprayed on to it with a hand pump or electric sprayer. The solution is allowed to stay on the carpet for a suitable dwell or reaction time.

The absorbent pad or bonnet, which looks like a towel, is placed on the drive block of a rotary floor machine and spun over the carpet surface at 100 to 300 rpm. This action serves to impregnate the carpet fibers with the chemical solution and then pick it up with the soils afterward.

  1. Fast, simple and inexpensive.                                                                                                                                     2. Excellent results with lightly soiled carpets.
  2. Dry cleaning with an absorbent compound

How it works

A powder that has been mixed with special solvents and cleaning agents is spread over the carpet, and then worked into the carpet fibers with a machine fitted with counter-rotating brushes. The powder absorbs soils in the carpet fibers. After it’s allowed to set on the carpet for 10 to 15 minutes, it’s vacuumed up.

  1. Very simple system with no special technical training required.                                                                                 2. Very fast drying, it typically only takes about 20 minutes before the carpet can be back in service.
  2. Dry foam or rotary shampoo method

How it works

A cleaning agent is applied to the carpet to help suspend dirt and debris in the carpet, which is then whipped into foam and worked into the carpet fibers with the rotating brushes of a special machine. After a short dwell time, the foam is extracted with a vacuum.

Pros

  1. Fast, simple to apply and inexpensive.                                                                                                                       2. Rotating brushes provide excellent agitation.                                                                                                             3. Small amount of moisture allows fast drying of carpet.

Garage Fire

Air Scrubber Air Scrubber in Garage

An accidental fire can occur in your garage from many household items and can easily smoke up a garage in minutes if it is not properly and quickly extinguish . While proper insurance can help mitigate financial loss, it is better to understand and work to prevent the situations that lead to garage fires. Most homes are stocked full with combustible items. This list is meant to help homeowners not only identify potential issues but also lower the risk of a fire. This particular instance the home owner wasn't sure what started it. The smoke was all throughout the garage and much of his tools and equipment needed cleaning. Whether it’s a candle accidentally burning throughout the night, faulty equipment, combustibles or any other scenario, homeowners should be aware of the most common causes of house /garage fires and work to minimize and prevent accidents before they occur. It would be a good idea to not leave a lot of items laying around on the floor and good housekeeping practices would be a great idea too. It would also be a good idea to always have a fire extinguisher ready just in case one is needed.

Got Mold?

5/6/2021 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors.

This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.

Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.

Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Summer Barbeque

5/6/2021 (Permalink)

10 Tips for Safe Summer Barbecues:

Do's and Don'ts That Will Keep You From Becoming a Statistic

Do:

  1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. Farther is even better. This includes portions attached to your house like carports, garages and porches. Grills should not be used underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. This applies to both charcoal and gas grills.
  2. Clean your grill regularly. If you allow grease and fat to build up on your grill, they provide more fuel for a fire. Grease is a major source of flare ups.
  3. Check for gas leaks. You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that's a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.
  4. Keep decorations away from your grill. Decorations like hanging baskets, pillows and umbrellas look pretty AND provide fuel for a fire. To make matters worse, today's decor is mostly made of artificial fibers that burn fast and hot, making this tip even more important.
  5. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. That way, if you have a minor flare-up you can spray it with the water to instantly calm it. The bonus of this tip is that water won't harm your food, so dinner won't be ruined!
  6. Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT. If you are unsure how to use the extinguisher, don't waste time fiddling with it before calling 911. Firefighters say many fire deaths occur when people try to fight a fire themselves instead of calling for expert help and letting the fire department do its job.

Don't:

  1. Turn on the gas while your grill lid is closed. NEVER do this. It causes gas to build up inside your grill, and when you do light it and open it, a fireball can explode in your face.
  2. Leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute. Plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are done and you can focus on grilling.
  3. Overload your grill with food. This applies especially fatty meats. The basic reason for this tip is that if too much fat drips on the flames at once, it can cause a large flare-up that could light nearby things on fire.
  4. Use a grill indoors. People often think it will be safe to use a grill, especially a small one, indoors. NOT TRUE. In addition to the fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly colorless, odorless gas. That gas needs to vent in fresh air or it can kill you, your family and pets.

If you do experience a house fire this summer be sure to call SERVPRO of Lake County at (352)735-3311 to help with all your fire damage and smoke damage needs. We are always here to help!

How to Put Out Kitchen Fires

When a fire starts in the kitchen, you need to act fast to keep the fire from getting out of control. But how you act depends on what kind of fire you have and where it is. Follow these instructions for putting out kitchen fires: getting out of control. But how you act depends on what kind of fire you have and where it is. Follow these instructions for putting out kitchen fires:

  • If you have a fire in the oven or the microwave, close the door or keep it closed, and turn off the oven. Don’t open the door! The lack of oxygen will suffocate the flames.
  • If your oven continues to smoke like a fire is still going on in there, call the fire department.
  • If you have a fire in a cooking pan, use an oven mitt to clap on the lid, then move the pan off the burner, and turn off the stove. The lack of oxygen will stop the flames in a pot.
  • If you can’t safely put the lid on a flaming pan or you don’t have a lid for the pan, use your fire extinguisher. Aim at the base of the fire — not the flames.
  • Never use water to put out grease fires! Water repels grease and can spread the fire by splattering the grease. Instead, try one of these methods:
    • If the fire is small, cover the pan with a lid and turn off the burner.
    • Throw lots of baking soda or salt on it. Never use flour, which can explode or make the fire worse.
    • Smother the fire with a wet towel or other large wet cloth.
    • Use a fire extinguisher.
  • Don’t swat at a fire with a towel, apron, or other clothing. You’re likely to fan the flames and spread the fire.

If the fire is spreading and you can’t control it, get everyone out of the house and call 911! Make sure everybody in your family knows how to get out of the house safely in case of a fire. Practice your fire escape route.

Types of Mold

5/4/2021 (Permalink)

Mold on wall Mold Growth

Alternaria: This occurs in damp places indoors, such as showers or under leaky sinks.

Aspergillus: This often grows indoors, on dust, powdery food items, and building materials, such as drywall.

Cladosporium: This can grow in either cool or warm areas. It tends to appear on fabrics and wood surfaces.

Penicillium: This tends to grow on materials with water damage. It often has a blue or green appearance.

Molds take a variety of forms and textures. They can be white, black, yellow, blue, or green and often look like discoloration or stain to a surface.

They can also have a velvety, fuzzy, or rough appearance, depending on the type of mold and where it is growing.

Places where mold often appears include:

  • areas where leakages and flooding have occurred
  • windows where condensation builds up
  • places where the air does not circulate, for example, behind a closet

Wet cellulose materials are most supportive of mold growth.

Examples include:

  • paper products, including wallpaper
  • cardboard
  • ceiling tiles
  • wood products
  • insulation materials
  • upholstery and other fabrics

Mold growth is usually visible and often produces a musty odor. It can damage household items, and it can also have effects on health.

Cleaning and disinfecting your building or facility if someone is sick. Close off areas used by the person who is sick.

Companies do not necessarily need to close operations, if they can close off affected areas.

Open outside doors and windows to increase air circulation in the area.

Wait 24 hours before you clean or disinfect. If 24 hours is not feasible, wait as long as possible.

Clean and disinfect all areas used by the person who is sick, such as offices, bathrooms, common areas, shared electronic equipment like tablets, touch screens, keyboards, remote controls, and ATM machines.

Vacuum the space if needed. Use vacuum equipped with high-efficiency particular air (HEPA) filter, if available.

Do not vacuum a room or space that has people in it. Wait until the room or space is empty to vacuum, such as at night, for common spaces, or during the day for private rooms.

Consider temporarily turning off room fans and the central HVAC system that services the room or space, so that particles that escape from vacuuming will not circulate throughout the facility.

Once area has been appropriately disinfected, it can be opened for use.

Workers without close contact with the person who is sick can return to work immediately after disinfection.

If more than 7 days since the person who is sick visited or used the facility, additional cleaning and disinfection is not necessary.

Continue routing cleaning and disinfection. This includes everyday practices that businesses and communities normally use to maintain a healthy environment.

Mold Remediation

Drywall removal Drywall removal and Hepa-Vacuuming from mold growth.

If you find mold growing on drywall, trim, or unfinished wood surfaces, and especially if the affected area is more than 10 square feet, hire a mold professional to discover the root and extent of the problem. They’ll also be able to direct you to a reliable mold remediation company such as SERVPRO of Lake County Florida. Reputable companies work with third-party Hygienist's instead of doing the inspection themselves. But be sure to check credentials when hiring an Hygienist. The mold industry is largely unregulated, but there are guidelines to help you know when you’re hiring a true professional. Analyzing air samples isn’t cheap and, depending on the lab used, can cost $30 to $150 for each sample. Some Hygienists roll sampling into their base price, others don’t. So make sure you ask. Not every mold issue requires sampling. If you can see mold, sampling is necessary only if you must identify the actual mold species for medical or legal reasons. However, if you think mold is present but can’t actually see it, samples can confirm your suspicions. Also, sampling typically is used after cleanup (clearance test) to verify success. Ask a Hygienist to explain why they’re taking samples and what hypothesis they’re trying to confirm. Just remember SERVPRO of Phone Lake Co. is here to help.

Electrical and Fire Safety Tips

  • Have your home electrical system thoroughly inspected by qualified electricians to ensure that all electrical work in the home meets the safety provisions in the NEC.
  • Install smoke detectors on every level of the home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area.
  • Ask a qualified electrician if your home would benefit from AFCI protection, especially during inspections of older homes or upgrades to electrical systems. These advanced new safety devices recognize dangerous conditions that are not detected by standard breakers.
  • Test smoke detectors and AFCIs monthly to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Establish an evacuation plan that can be used in case of an emergency, and practice with your family.
  • Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the light fixture.
  • In homes with young children, install tamper resistant receptacles to prevent electrical shocks and burns.
  • Conduct a basic assessment of your home electrical system, electrical cords, extension cords, power plugs, and outlets.
  • Look for telltale signs of electrical problems such as dim and flickering lights, unusual sizzling and buzzing sounds from your electrical system, insulation and circuit breakers that trip repeatedly. Contact a qualified electrician immediately.
  • Use extension cords only temporarily, and never with space heaters or air conditioners.
  • Avoid overloading outlets. Consider having additional circuits or outlets added by a qualified electrician as needed.

Appliance Fire

Kitchen Fire Appliance Fire in the Kitchen

Common Appliances that potentially can cause fires

  1. Dishwashers. Have you ever opened your dishwasher immediately after it finished its cycle? The heat that shoots out when you open the door can be overwhelming. A dishwasher contains heating elements that dry your dishes. These heating elements get wet, heat up, and cool down every time you use the dishwasher. Old or faulty elements can start a fire. Never turn on a dishwasher before leaving your home. While it's nice to return to clean dishes at the end of the day, it's not worth the risk.
  2. Dryers. Lint buildup in a dryer and the importance of cleaning it often. If a Dryer is not cleaned regularly, there is a higher risk of a fire.
  3. Microwaves. Microwaves are very convenient. Warming up leftover meals can be a big timesaver when the family schedule is hectic. They also can be very dangerous. There have been many complaints about microwaves starting on their own and causing a fire. If you hear your microwave running, and you didn't turn it on, unplug it immediately. Microwaves: a fire hazard in your kitchen
  4. Refrigerators. One might never think of a refrigerator being a fire risk; however, an overheated compressor or an electrical short can cause fires. In addition, a light that stays on all the time can be hazardous.
  5. Toasters. In 1913, Westinghouse debuted the first two-sided toaster. Toasters have electric elements inside that are used to brown your bread or bagel. If the toaster fails and doesn't turn off, a fire can start. Never leave a toaster unsupervised and remove the crumbs on the bottom of the toaster regularly. In addition, inspect the electric elements for stuck crumbs.

While some Texans have begun to wade through the cost of home repairs, others are still displaced  having fled to hotels to escape darkened or cold houses. Most said they are grateful to have found accommodations in quickly filling hotels, but were concerned about the accumulating expenses. The financial worries come about a year after the start of a global pandemic that decimated many people’s incomes and claimed thousands of jobs. The storm has also displaced worries about maintaining social distancing for some desperate to find a place with heating or power. In Houston, a family were able to find a room at a Hampton Inn, costing $140 a night, after the temperature in their home started dropping. They grabbed meals from from where ever they could and found a few restaurants that were open for takeout. They were hoping the power would come back on soon so that their pipes would not burst from the freezing temperatures. They were not so lucky, when they went to check on their home they found water everywhere from broken pipes.

Having all the supplies and equipment available when mold is found within the walls during the removal of drywall. The following list are some of the primary items you may wish to have before attempting wall board removal, especially if you believe the area may have experienced a water leak in the past.

1. A HEPA vacuum to remove mold spores before attempting to move.
2. Heavy mil plastic to wrap pieces of mold contaminated wall board before moving to the outdoors.
3. Other precautions include; turn off central air systems since it may spread mold and mildew spores throughout the home, limit the movement of other Business or home occupants during the removal process and seal off the work area or room from other indoor living spaces. If there is visible amounts of mold found during a remodel project, you should consider hiring a mold remediation specialist such as SERVPRO of Lake County Florida.

Debris in a lanai Bags of debris

When SERVPRO entered the home there was a tiny pathway from one room going from a chair to a packed full of debris bathroom. We were shocked to see so much debris (contents) that had taken over so much of the house, it was impossible to even get a feel for the layout of the house, so I excused myself and went outside to figure out where to start. What I guesstimated to be about 1,100 sq. ft. home Filled with all kinds of debris (contents) and totally covering almost the entire inside of the home. We ordered a dumpster to be put onsite and started going through all the contents to determine what was salvageable and what was unsalvageable. All the unsalvageable items were tossed into the dumpster after we received permission and the salvageable items we placed in a onsite storage unit until the home was emptied and cleaned.

East Cobb, GA Mold Removal and Mold Remediation | SERVPRO of East Cobb

Some restoration companies advertise “mold removal” and may even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy because removing all mold from a house or business is impossible; microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Here are the facts:

For all your remediation needs, please call SERVPRO of Lake County Florida at 352-735-3311

Drying Chamber

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

Plastic Drying chamber Drying Concrete wall Cavity

The Essential Guide to Drying Chambers in Water Damage Restoration

Drying chambers, by nature, will limit the risk of moisture spreading. Because they can section off a specific area, the moisture is quickly pulled out of the air by dehumidifiers. If not sealed, the moisture would move throughout the building, potentially causing damage in other areas. Drying chambers can be established for any site requiring treatment, including small cavities, cupboards, and within walls.

A main concern with other treatment methods is how much resourcing is required to dry a given area. With drying chambers, you’re able to target the specific location you need to work on and not waste energy by the surrounding environment. If the flooring is all that needs to be treated, you’re not losing precious time and power to keep an entire room at the proper temperature, with the right amount of airflow. You’re simply applying energy to the damaged flooring, dramatically reducing resource requirements and saving yourself from other potential issues.

While drying chambers are efficient, they need to be implemented correctly to maximize their benefits.

Treated Wall studs Encapsulated wall studs after sanding and treating with antimicrobial products

When is Encapsulating Mold Appropriate?

Always wear the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) before removing as much mold as possible by scrubbing the moldy surface with a fungicide. Professionals will sometimes sand wood to remove additional mold that could not be removed by scrubbing. Sanding mold is rather hazardous though, because it sends so many microscopic mold spores flying into the air, where they are easily inhaled. Only professionals should attempt to sand moldy wood. After as much mold as possible has been removed, a mold sealant is applied. Note that you should never paint over mold with regular paint. Regular paint, or even mold-resistant paint, will not prevent mold in the wood from growing or spreading. It will only make it harder to see the mold when it does begin to grow. Only a product designed specifically to encapsulate mold should be used for that purpose.

Summer Is for BBQ

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

10 Tips for Safe Summer Barbecues:

Dos and Don'ts That Will Keep You From Becoming a Statistic

Do:

The Short- and Long-Term Effects of Water Damage

The first problem that you might be concerned about when it comes to flooding in your home is damaged belongings. As you might already know, even minor flooding can lead to damaged or ruined furniture and other belongings. If your home has recently been flooded, there is a good chance that at least some of your belongings will have to be thrown away. Before you start bagging everything up and hauling it off to be disposed of, though, you should contact a water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Lake County FL In some cases, household belongings can be salvaged. For example, during the water damage process, water is often removed from upholstered furniture in an effort to save that furniture from permanent damage. Sometimes, clothing and linens can be washed and salvaged. If dried in time, wooden furniture can sometimes be restored after flooding too.

About 12:15 am on a Saturday morning SERVPRO of Lake County Florida received a call about a water damage at a local hospital. Our crew responded very quickly and arrived on site at 1:00 am, that was a 45 minute responds time on site. They discovered a chilled water line had broken on the 2nd floor, which affected the 1st and 2nd floor hallways and patient rooms. We extracted all the water we could then we began to set equipment. The facilities director asked us if we could keep the equipment cords from the air movers and dehumidifiers away from the center of the hallway as much as possible. We agreed with him and taped down the all of the cords that had to cross the hallway. The hospital facilities director was very pleased with our company. Removal of Base Board

Technician removing base board Removing Base Board molding from water damage

How To: Remove Baseboard - Bob Vila

Whether you’re planning on replacing a floor or simply wanting to change up the style of trim in a room, your project to-do list will likely start with removal of the baseboard, that strip of wood or plastic that covers the joint between the walls and floor, as well as any shoe molding that may be present. Particularly if you want to save money by reusing the same baseboard over a new floor, it’s important to free the trim without damaging it—and without scratching, denting, or gouging the walls. At one time, achieving such precision required a number of outmoded tools, hard work, lots of patience, and extra time and money spent repairing holes and replacing damaged trim. Now, with the help of an impressively simple new tool called the Trim Puller, obtaining a pro-quality job is a total snap, saving you time and money along the way.

Content Manipulation

Contents in the middle of a room. Content Manipulation

A content manipulation is either packing or moving back your items after a major loss such as water or fire damage in order to quicken the remediation process. A pack-out is the moving of customer’s contents to a secured storage location. Here at SERVPRO of Lake County Florida, we have multiple storage options: whether its your own unit or off site storage units we are here to help. Sometimes we just move it carefully in the center of there home if the wish. There are certain items that we do not pack-out; these tend to be high value items such as jewelry, family heirlooms, or other items requested by the homeowner. We do not pack-out liquids due to the possibility of spills. Once remediation is complete we then pack-back your items to their original spots.

Broken Pipe

Broken or damaged pipes aren’t always obvious. Most pipes burst or leak without warning, and it can be days, weeks or even months before you notice the signs of a damaged pipe. However, once you do spot a leaking or broken pipe, it’s critical to act fast. A broken pipe that isn’t immediately repaired can become a disastrous problem. Leaking water may damage your property and belongings, and your furniture, appliances, carpets, rugs and even clothes can be ruined in a broken pipe accident. Water seepage that’s left attended can also impact your Business or family’s health, as bacteria and mold flourish in damp environments. In this particular case SERVPRO responded to a commercial water loss caused by a broken pipe in the restroom wall. The Client contacted us as soon as it happened and we were on site within an hour. We extracted water and set drying equipment and the customer was pleased with everything we did for them.

Smoke Damage on Trophy Mounts

Trophy Mounts Soot Cleaning Trophy Mounts

An accidental fire can occur from many household items and can easily smoke up a house in minutes if it is not properly and quickly handled. While proper insurance can help mitigate financial loss, it is better to understand and work to prevent the situations that lead to house fires on any kind. Most homes are stocked full with combustible items. This list is meant to help homeowners not only identify potential issues but also lower the risk of a house fire. This particular instance was a home owner was using the self-cleaning attachment for his electric stove. The sensors on the stove malfunctioned and it didn’t shut off. The smoke was all throughout the house and his collection of trophy mounts were all affected. Whether it’s a candle accidentally burning throughout the night, faulty cooking equipment or any other scenario, homeowners should be aware of the most common causes of house fires and work to minimize and prevent accidents before they occur. When using the self-clean on your stove, it would be a good idea not to leave and be aware of what could happen. It would also be a good idea to always have a fire extinguisher ready just in case one is needed.

Mold Action Guide: What to Do About Toxic or Allergenic Mold in buildings: Step-by-Step Action Guide to the necessary steps to address mold in buildings, How to find toxic mold in a home, house, building, or office, how and when to hire an expert, how and why to test for mold, how to remove mold, how to prevent mold.

If roof leaks or attic moisture condensation due to a combination of inadequate attic ventilation and a building moisture source (wet basement, plumbing leaks, roof leaks) causes excessive moisture or actual wet conditions in an attic, conditions are ripe for extensive mold growth. Visible mold may appear on wood surfaces in an attic such as on rafters or roof sheathing. Hidden mold may be present and may be even more of a problem if it forms in insulation or in the ducts and air handler of an air conditioning or heating/air conditioning system. Mold from an attic can be a problem on lower floors.Typical building air convection currents tend to move air up and out from lower to upper building levels, so one would not think that much mold would move down from an attic into the living area. But important exceptions to this can quickly move problem mold from an attic into a living area.

Ozone Treatment

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

Warning sign taped on Door Warning sign, Ozone Generator in use, Do no enter

Outdoors, odors are eliminated using both UV light and O3. Indoors, most places that generate odors receive very little UV light or O3. The Ozone Generators creates O3, or ozone, in a special process that utilizes an electrical current. Ozone works by breaking down odors and other pollutants at their source.

(Thunderstorms create ozone or O3 and also from sunlight striking the earth’s atmosphere. As an example, we’ve all taken a walk after a thunderstorm and experienced the fresh smell in the air. That's O3, or ozone, at work.)                                                                                                Normal oxygen (O2) is converted to O3, which is commonly called ozone. It reverts back to O2 in about an hour if the O3 is unused. This leaves the air fresh because the source of the odor has been permanently removed. And there are no artificial odors so the space becomes free of odors. Employ the power of ozone and create an outdoor fresh environment in your facility!

Cleaning after demo Detailed Micro Cleaning

SERVPRO of Lake County Florida was contacted by a home owner for some remediation services. When we contacted the home owner she stated that she had the home inspected by a environmental company and that they took air samples in her home. We ask her if we could see the written protocol (report). After reviewing all the documents we began putting up containment in the kitchen and started running the air scrubbers while we began the process of removing all the upper kitchen cabinets that were affected. The drywall behind the cabinets was also affected and had to be removed. After all the demo was done we began the process of Hepa-vacuuming the entire area that was affected. The next process was wiping down the entire area with a antimicrobial product. After all this work was completed the environmental company did a clearance test in the home. The home owner was extremely happy with the entire process and would highly recommend SERVPRO of Lake Co. Florida

Mold Mold on top of Cabinets

Black mold in cabinet - What you should know!

So you just opened a cabinet door to grab something from under the sink and noticed a musty smell, moved some things around and noticed some mold growth. Now what? Well, don’t get overly worried right now. It may be the case you just have a very small problem on your hands that can be dealt with fairly simply and affordably. Of course, it may also be the very small tip of a larger iceberg. How can you know for sure? Well, technically it’s impossible to know what’s going on below the cabinets without removing them. But that’s clearly an expensive process that you don’t want to begin unless you know you have a bigger problem on your hands. What we suggest in this case is to call SERVPRO of Lake County Florida a certified water & mold damage restoration company to have us assess the situation. We can check behind and underneath the cabinets to see if moisture has traveled elsewhere. If that is the case, it’s usually the case the mold growth has also expanded. But mold damage can be tricky because you really don’t know what you’re up against until you start peeling back layers. Given that, many homeowners can’t help but start doing a little demolition themselves.  If you feel inclined to start pulling back cabinets or punching through drywall, please just keep in mind that doing so will kick up mold particles that you can end up breathing or that can travel to other parts of your home. That’s why SERVPRO will contain the affected area before removing any areas as well as wear full body and face protection.

Drywall removal

Suspect growth removal Cutting out Drywall

When sawing through moldy drywall, you can have an assistant hold a vacuum hose with a Hepa filter nearby to further decrease the spread of mold spores or our SERVPRO Franchise uses a drywall saw with an attachment for our Hepa-vacuum. When removing moldy materials, place them in heavy plastic garbage bags before carrying it out of the home so no mold spores are spread to other areas of the home in the process. It’s imperative that you do everything possible to prevent spreading mold spores throughout the house so that you don’t end up with mold in other rooms. If there is any mold on the wooden studs, clean those as well as you can with an antimicrobial cleanser. Allow them to dry completely, then apply anti-microbial sealant to make sure any remaining traces of mold cannot continue to grow and spread. Sanding wooden studs to remove mold growth should only be done by a professional who is suited up in PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), since it greatly increases exposure to potentially harmful mold spores. SERVPRO technicians are well trained to preform remediation services on any scale whether small or large projects. Please call SERVPRO of Lake county Florida at 1-352-735-3311
