What Happens During a Pack-Out After a Home Disaster?

Pack-outs are performed by SERVPRO Franchises on behalf of property owners after damage caused by water, fire or smoke. It involves removing and transporting damaged property to a secure location for processing and restoration.

During a pack-out:

  • After the initial inspection, your restoration professionals will let you know whether or not an item can be restored.  You will find that most items can be brought to preloss condition. All contents will be inspected and any pre-existing damage will be documented before being sent out to be restored. This documentation helps to estimate the losses and facilitates the filing of your insurance claim.
  • If an item does not require packing out, it will be secured and protected while structural repairs are made to the property.
  • In some cases, affected items are cleaned in place to prevent acidic residues from causing any further damage.
  • Small items will be individually wrapped in paper, boxed, labeled and inventoried by your SERVPRO professional. This includes kitchen knives, spoons, pots and pans, dishes, storage containers, etc.
  • Large items like upholstery and wooden furniture will be carefully inspected, often using high intensity light to detect all damages that existed before the disaster.
  • You will receive a copy of every inventory sheet with noted preexisting damage, if any.
  • When the transportation begins, items will be loaded and secured in a covered box truck using pads and the appropriate packing protocols.
  • The restoration process is constantly monitored and you will be informed on the status of your claim before the items are ready to be sent back to your home or business. For all your pack out needs please call SERVPRO of Lake County Florida at 1-352-735-3311

Packouts in General

The term pack out is often used to refer to any situation where the personal property contents of a home or office need to be removed so that repairs or construction can be done. Contents are defined as any items that are not permanently secured to the structure. Once the repairs are finished, the contents are then returned to the site and replaced. While it seems like a packout should be a straightforward process, choosing the wrong company to handle your pack out can have dire consequences, both for the owners of the contents being packed and the insurance adjusters who must deal with the consequences of a failed pack out. SERVPRO employees are trained in doing packouts from inventorying and labeling your personal property to stacking the boxes neatly in the storage units.

Why SERVPRO - Carpet Cleaning

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

Stains on carpet Carpet cleaning

A large percentage of homes and business have carpet in at least one room. Carpet tends to catch dust, dirt, hair and other soils which negatively affect the life span of the floors. There are preventative measures one can take to reduce the wear and tear, thereby extending the life of the carpeting. These measures include vacuuming regularly, spot removal, rearranging furniture to alter traffic patterns, and using rugs and runners. Another useful task is to change HVAC filters regularly to help filter the dust and grit in the air.

A guideline for carpet cleaning frequency recommends carpets that see normal use be cleaned every 6-12 months and high use (such as entry ways or structures with high traffic) be cleaned every 3-6 months. Extending the time between cleanings causes the soils to be pushed deeper and deeper into the base of the carpet, which cannot be removed. Studies have shown the farther down the soils have been pushed, the less they can be removed, even with the more aggressive methods of carpet cleaning.

At SERVPRO of Lake County, we employ the hot water extraction method for carpet cleaning. This involves using an emulsifier to treat the carpets and lift soils and stains. After applying the solution to the floor, the technician will then use the extractor to remove the emulsifier, soils, and most of the moisture. Once the carpets are cleaned, we do recommend applying a scotch guard to help protect your carpets between cleanings. The application is quick and won't break the bank. If you are interested in our carpet cleaning service, please call the office today.

Building Inspections

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

Home Inspection Happy Homeowners after purchasing a home inspected by SERVPRO

Why are building inspections important? Building inspections are very important to home buyers before making a home purchase. This is because there are many hidden things in a home a home owner is unaware of such as previous water leaks, HVAC cleanliness issues, microbial growth areas, roof damage, cracks in the foundation, or Vapor barrier leaks just to name a few. Potential home owners who make investments prior to having their homes inspected are risking hundreds or thousands of dollars on potentially unexpected repair costs. So the best way to have peace of mind is to hire a professional company like SERVPRO of Lake County to help evaluate your potential purchase before you invest any money in the structure. Pack Out

Packed Boxes Content Storage

Simply put, a pack out service specializes in retrieving items from a home that has been damaged by a flood or other major disaster. Afterwards, they help to ensure the quality of the items they have retrieved. A typical pack out service operation consists of three steps. These steps are retrieval, storage, and restoration. The pack out service is unable to give your home back to you. But they can help save the most precious items in the house, long after you thought they were gone forever. They can also attempt to retrieve artwork, consumer electronics, furniture, and so on. However, not everything will be salvageable, which is why it’s important to have a prioritized list of what you would like them to seek out.                                   Once the pack out service has retrieved the items, they will need to be placed in a safe place. Most pack out services have special locations where these items can be stored, either all at once or in stages as the retrieval process continues. These storage facilities are clean and climate-controlled. And the main purpose of such a facility is to house your items while your home is being restored.
